At Solmate Socks, we know the importance of socks. They not only provide warmth and protection for our precious feet, but also a cozy sense of comfort. Despite their importance, socks are among the most needed items at homeless shelters across the US, but the least donated.
Because of this, Solmate has been donating socks for the past 16 years to various charity groups across the US, including family services organizations, refugee centers and homeless shelters. These donation recipients have shown immense gratitude over the years, and they have reinforced how important it is for our company to continually find ways to give back and help those who are less fortunate.
As a zero-waste company, we are always looking for ways to utilize any sock scraps, overages and leftovers to not only fulfill our commitment to being eco-friendly, but also to find a way to create something useful. In 2015, Solmate Socks acquired thousands of pounds of perfectly good yarn that, for various reasons, was not being used in production. When this yarn became available, we decided to combine our zero-waste philosophy with our desire to make a difference. We partnered with our knitting mill in North Carolina (Sunnyside Textiles), and together we produced over 15,000 pairs of brand new socks and shipped them to various charities around the country. Sunnyside not only volunteered significant knitting machine time, but also coordinated shipping these first quality socks all over the US.
As we saw the success of this initiative grow, we invited our other suppliers to join us in making a difference and not surprisingly, they did! Whether it was donating raw yarn materials, knitting or finishing services, five American companies joined together to compassionately create warm socks for those in need. There was no money exchanged; just an honest desire to help. In less than a year, 112,324 pairs of first quality socks were made and donated to charities all over the country.
The overwhelming sense of appreciation and thankfulness from these charities was unimaginable, so we decided to make this an annual effort. Our wish is that each pair of socks donated inspires a new sense of hope in each recipient; thus, why we call this program “New Hope.”
We also want to inspire other American manufacturers to take a look at their own companies and discover ways to utilize excess capabilities to make a difference in their communities. We truly believe that if we all find a way to give back, no matter how big or small, together we can make a huge impact in this world and ultimately change someone’s life, one foot at a time.
